A Black and White Affair
“Who says that you can’t have a black and white wedding?” I got the most spirited rhetorical question from one of my friends when Michelle, our other friend, said that the color black is no place for a wedding. We were talking about a recent wedding of our high school friend where the bride decided to pursue a black and white motif. From the black and white damask invitations kit, to the table napkins and even donning a black and white gown as our friend walked down the aisle. Sure, it was striking, but all that black, my friend said, just looked “out of place.”
I’ve always been a fan of black and white, although I never would have imagined black to be a part of my wedding. I mean, sure, colors are fine; bright purple, pink or royal blue! But, black just forms some hesitation. I guess it comes from the fact that we often associate it with bad things or omens. Like, how we never cross a black cat’s path, or how almost all vampires and ghouls or other creatures of the dark all wear black. These might not have anything to do with a wedding, but I think somehow it has formed our perception and association with the color. Anyway, we never got to resolve that issue since knowing those two, it’s going to take them forever to agree on something.
