A “Lacey” Bride
Most people think twice before going out in public wearing lace, let alone wear one to in their wedding gown! Although a bride donning a lace adorned gown might have elicited quite a few frowned faces or just unusual stares a couple of years back, this is not the case today. Many brides are in fact embracing lace, whether its incorporated in that personally designed mid-calf, off shoulder wedding gown you are wearing, to that Ivory Eleanor lace garter on your leg and even as lace gift wraps to your presents or part of your wedding decor; lace is definitely back with a vengeance.
It might not be easy to pinpoint where and when lacemaking first started, but the two main countries vying for it are Belgium and Italy. Back in the 17th and 18th century, lace was considered to be a precious and expensive garment. It was so precious that farms were sold for it and it was included in the wills of the noble and even taxed! Since the lacemaking machine was invented, lace began to lose its prestige. Up until recently, people have looked at lace as something grandma would wear, however, that’s slowly changing, and now we don’t have to be afraid to wear lace and embrace it. Let’s just hope people don’t start imposing taxes on it again.
