The Mother-In-Law Quandary
When, Penny, a friend of mine, came home from their honeymoon recently, she and her husband found a black accessory case waiting for them. She later learned from her new mother-in-law that it was a gift from one of her friends (the mother-in-law’s, not Pen’s) who wasn’t in the wedding, but was thoughtful enough to send something. The mother -in-law then casually mentions that maybe Penny and her husband could still get more gifts if they want to host an after wedding party. The mother-in-law, apparently, still had plenty more friends and family she originally wanted to invite to the wedding. But since Penny only wanted a small and intimate one, this didn’t happen.
So, Penny laments. And then confides, she doesn’t know how to handle this new relationship. I’m very sympathetic since I have been in this kind of a quandary in the beginning, too. I then reminded Penny that she shouldn’t really take everything personally. Some mothers-in-law are tough to deal with. We all have heard the horror stories about them. But if Penny was able to get the kind of wedding she wanted, and had to be strict about who to invite then, I don’t think this will be a problem for her. And I am pretty sure that her mom-in-law only means well and was just too eager.
