When Did Giving Groomsmen Gifts Started?

One of the most popular groomsmen gifts we usually see are cufflinks, bottle opener key chain, pens, or mugs. They usually come engraved to lend a personal touch. Groomsmen gifts are given to the husband-to-be’s entourage. It’s sort of like a thank you gift for taking part in the wedding and helping the bride and groom get through it with less hassle.

But did you know that back in the day, a traditional gift for any best man would have to be milk, or poultry or something to that effect? If we are to believe old wives’ tales, the tradition of giving gifts to the groomsmen or best men started in the medieval days when it was common to “steal brides” to make wives out of them and main livelihood people had were farm goods. Since there were fewer women, most “grooms” would have to go to the next village to look for their brides. And it was the role of the best man or any of the groomsmen to help the groom find his mate. Sometimes they would have to kidnap a bride for him, if needed. So, in return the best men are given gifts in exchange for this.

It’s a great thing it’s not the case today, isn’t it? Groomsmen now make sure that the future “groom” would have to be in their best behavior before the big wedding.
