Saying ‘No” to Wearing Your Mother’s Wedding Gown

If you are super closer with your mother and you happen to be on the hunt for a wedding gown, then it’s not unlikely that your own mother (if she’s kept her own wedding gown) will offer or even insist that you wear her wedding gown. Now, there is nothing wrong with this especially if you think that the gown would fit the theme of your wedding. However, if you would rather choose and pick your own wedding gown, rather than wear your mom’s then you might have to break it to her gently. Grooms might not have to worry when it comes having their dad’s ask them to wear their own Fidel stainless steel cufflinks or something similar to that, but for women, it’s a bit tricky to say no to mom’s wedding gown.

After all, there’s a big possibility that apart from the memories, she’s kept that gown for the specific reason that you could wear it on your own big day. Some mothers are adamant that you wear “the gown” especially if it has been a heirloom for your generation and not just your mother. This can be troubling especially if the gown is absolutely hideous. Of course, the best way to deal with this would be to explain to your mom that the gown simply won’t work or you have something in mind. If she insists, then look for a compromise that will please both of you guys. This will at least pacify her and make her understand that not everything that was fashionable back then will still work today. Just make sure to break it to her nicely though.
